1、can 作“能、会”讲，表示能力；否定式是 cannot例：Electricitycandrive motors and so on. 电能开动马达等Hecannotoperate the optical computer. 他不会操作这台光电脑。Canyou write in German? 你能用德语写吗?These conditionscangive an impetus to trade. 这些条件会促进贸易。
3、cannot, can… no 作“不可能、决不会”讲，表示对现在情况的判断例：Their calculationscannotbe correct. 他们的计算决不会准确的。Therecanbenoknowledge apart from practice. 离开实践的知识是不可能有的。（没按原文结构译）Theycan’tbe using the laboratory now. 他们现在不可能在用这个实验室。
5、can 和“be able + 不定式”的用法差异例：这两者在意思上差别不大，只是“be able+ 不定式”比can具有更多的时态形式。Icantell you the correct time. = Iam ableto tell you the correct time. 我能告诉你准确的时间。I am sorry (that) Ihaven't been ableto write a letter to you. 对不起，我一直没能给你写信。（现在完成时。不能用cannot代替，因时态各异。）He said (that) hehad not been ableto plunge into work in time. 他说他未能及时投入工作。（过去完成时。同上。）My grandson willbe ableto send a voice mail in another few years. 再隔几年我的孙子就会发语音邮件。（不要说※：…cansend …）
